Horror game Devotion is back and ready to purchase

Devotion was one of the most acclaimed horror games of 2019 that sadly had its fame cut short due to controversy. Soon after its initial release, players discovered an image that referenced an internet meme comparing Chinese President Xi Jinping to Winnie the Pooh.

As a result, livid Chinese players review bombed the game on Steam which led the game to be removed by the developer to rectify the issue. Concern mounted when the game made no signs of being returned to Steam, and only intensified when the game’s publisher Indievent lost its business license in China.

Since then, developer Red Candle Games has spent the past two years trying to release Devotion on digital store fronts with little success until recently. In December 2020, GOG announced that Devotion would be available to buy on its digital storefront. The joy of the game’s resurrection was short lived, however, as only hours later GOG announced that the game wouldn’t be releasing on its store after all.

The storefront cited receiving “many messages from gamers” as the reason for its decision, which didn’t sit well with the many gamers that were actually excited for its release. No one believed GOG’s excuse and proceeded to ridicule the company on its tweet announcing the cancellation of Detention’s release.

After some months without any word from Red Candle Games, Devotion was ready for purchase on the developer’s own storefront, alongside another horror title called Detention.

Suffice it to say, Devotion’s resurrection is not only a triumph for Red Candle Games, but for gamers everywhere who’ve wanted to try this budding classic. Devotion is a chilling and heartbreaking title that roots its horror in Taiwanese culture; the result is a uniquely breathtaking and haunting experience that will immerse you in its story.

While its gameplay may seem familiar to any seasoned horror fan, the story and atmosphere are well worth the purchase price of $16.99.
