Wow, Resident Evil has been around for 25 years now, isn’t that crazy? The original Resident Evil came out in 1996 and was the beginning of a long, storied franchise that went to all sorts of places. We’ve had the classic survival horror formula shook up by the eventual introduction of Resident Evil 4, which eschewed the fixed camera angle presentation of the original games and instead opted for a third-person camera instead. Up until the seventh game, we had nothing but an action-focused Resident Evil every couple of years instead of the traditional formula.

It’s been a crazy ride. Resident Evil has been around for such a long time that we’ve come back full circle and now are leaning back into old-school survival horror. The future of the series is bright with the success of entries like Resident Evil 7 and the remakes of the second and third game, so we’ve got a lot to look forward to whatever Capcom has planned going forward. Seeing as how the series has been around for 25 years, what better way to celebrate its success and legacy than with a 25th Anniversary celebration to announce new Resident Evil projects?

Capcom has launched a Resident Evil 25th Anniversary Halloween website and they’ve set it up to announce various projects that are in the pipeline. So far there are only two things that have been revealed so far: a lottery that you can enter by Tweeting about Resident Evil and of course, Resident Evil 4 for the Oculus Rift. Nothing too exciting as of right now, but there’s plenty of stuff being announced over the course of October; the 21st seems to have the most announcements but I wouldn’t be surprised if the biggest announcements happen towards the end of the month. If you’re interested in checking the site out, keep in mind that it is in Japanese, so befriend Google Translate and hope for the best (or just learn Japanese real quick).

It’s an exciting time to be a Resident Evil fan these days, as we’ve gotten various hits over the past couple of years, and it seems like Capcom is going to set up a couple more for the future. We already know a Resident Evil 4 remake is in the works, but what other projects could be in the works for the series? Capcom has been dipping its toes into online multiplayer for the series with very little success, so maybe they’ll wise up and maybe remake the Outbreak games that came out years ago. Who knows? Maybe every single announcement will be a different addition to the Resident Evil merch store. Hopefully not, but seeing what Konami has pulled with Silent Hill has me on edge for these kinds of announcements lately.

But Resident Evil has been good for a good while now, so I’m more than likely wrong.
