Spider-Man 2 should adopt this key GTA 5 mechanic

Spider-Man 2 GTA 5

Recently, PlayStation blew everyone’s minds with their 2021 Showcase presentation and announced that Insomniac Games were working on Spider-Man 2. In the cinematic trailer, we see Peter Parker and Miles Morales shoulder-to-shoulder and they both look brilliant. The only problem is… We want to play as both of these Spider-Men after their respective titles: Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. That’s why we think Spider-Man 2 should adopt one of the key mechanics used by GTA 5 – character switching.

Why should Spider-Man 2 adopt this mechanic?

Insomniac Games’ recent announcements of Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine sounds a lot like them setting up the IGMU: Insomniac Games Marvel Universe – it’ll catch on, trust us. However, that does leave them with a little bit of a problem when it comes to Spider-Man. Nowadays, they’ve got two fully fleshed-out and developed Spider-Man characters to play with – they also have their own abilities and powers.

You can see what we mean in the Reveal Trailer below:

Spider-Man tackled Miles Morales’ involvement by including him in certain gameplay segments – much like they did Mary Jane Watson. This was fine, albeit a little boring, as it broke up the Henchman-smacking that Spider-Man was full of and it offered us a unique insight into the world around Peter Parker.

On the flip side, Spider-Man Miles Morales handled Peter Parker’s involvement by just shipping him out of the country while Miles Morales’ story takes place. You hear from him in parts, but for the most part, this is purely a story based on Miles Morales – as it should be!

Now though, we’ve got two Spider-Men to play with and we want to play with both of them. The only acceptable advancement on the system used by Insomniac Games in Spider-Man, where you would sneak around as Mary Jane Watson and Miles Morales for a couple of missions, is to adopt GTA V’s character switching mechanic.

Insomniac Games are masters of manipulating the PS5’s power – we’ve already seen them be able to load up entire worlds instantly in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. So, why wouldn’t they be able to include a character switching mechanic? GTA 5 is using this mechanic on the Xbox 360, so we can’t imagine Spider-Man 2 will have any problems adopting it.

The GTA 5 character switching mechanic could open up a new degree of strategy for Spider-Man 2 – not to mention, we could then include characters like Black Cat as playable characters. Peter Parker and Miles Morales have different skill sets, even if they share the same basic premise of web-slinging and butt-kicking.

Peter Parker’s Spider-Man in Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man game relies on gadgets. Miles Morales, however, has his “Venom” abilities and the ability to cloak himself. Even at a most basic level, they play differently enough to warrant having them both available in-game. Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man games both have unique enemies that require differing strategies – why wouldn’t you want to take this up a notch and have both of them fighting alongside one another?

With WB Games’ Gotham Knights on the horizon, a game that appears to allow players to switch between members of the Bat-Family, could Insomniac Games follow a similar approach? We know there’s a way that this can work and we just hope that the people working on Spider-Man 2 have played a bit of GTA 5 and thought “you know what, that would work”.
