Destiny 2: Festival of the Lost first impressions

Oh boy, it’s that time again in Destiny 2, where Bungie brings an event like Festival of the Lost in the game to sell us more cosmetics. Maybe that’s a bit too cynical. In actuality, these events are very fun for a short while but once you’ve got everything you want, there’s not too much of a point in continuing the event after you’ve got your favorite gun. You can kind of apply that to all of the events we’ve had in Destiny so far. However, it seems like this year is going to have some changes, as Festival of the Lost seems like it’s going to be at least doing something different.

But is it worth re-installing Destiny? Well, that’s gonna depend on whether or not the following paragraphs are gonna compel you to scratch that loot-itch we all have from playing so much Destiny.

So this time, we’re not going into the haunted forest to kill a bunch of enemies and get caught in a stupid trap at the end, this time, we’re putting together a spooky book of stories. Woooo, that’s very different. But not really. In actuality, you’re not doing anything radically different from what you’ve already been doing in past Festival of the Lost events, as you’re playing the FPS-MMORPG, Destiny, after all. You’re gonna be killing stuff while wearing a silly mask and grinding candy so you can get rad prizes, much like the other years, but the main difference this time is that you won’t be running around in a haunted forest anymore.

Instead, you’re going to be exploring “haunted lost sectors” which are nothing like the forest from previous years. Before you enter them, however, you need to obtain spectral pages so that those haunted lost sectors are worth a damn; spectral pages are obtained when you do any activity you can think of (you know the ones). Once you obtain them, you’re then supposed to take them to the aforementioned lost sectors and summon spooky mini-bosses that you then kill to turn the spectral pages into manifested pages.

Once you’ve got those, you can then add them to the book that’s next to Eva in the tower; for every two pages you turn in, you get some lore to add to your collection. The lore entries are pretty fun to read if you’re looking to expand your understanding of the Destiny universe. Aside from that, there’s not much else to really detail about the event, this is pretty much all you’re going to be doing until the event’s over. Given that there doesn’t seem to be anything drastically different this time around, does this mean you should drop everything and grind the hell out of Festival of the Lost?

As it is right now, this year’s Festival of the Lost isn’t all too different from the previous years of Destiny 2, as we’re just going through the same motions with a minor twist. I can personally appreciate the differences this time around, but at the end of the day, you’re just killing the same mobs as always but with a Halloween skin put on top. The lore and guns are nice, but you’ve probably got stuff that’s just as good if not better than what the event has to offer. If this is your first-ever Festival of the Lost, however, then you should give this one a try, as you’ll earn some nice stuff as a newcomer.

You’re probably low on resources and gear, so doing these activities during Festival of the Lost will be a good way to bolster both in a pretty easy, if somewhat tedious, manner. For all of you vets, I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to skip this event altogether, as there isn’t anything all that engaging on offer here. The guns are cool and all but when they just seem like more loot to add to the pile, it doesn’t compel one (myself in this case) to continue doing the event for more than a day or two. I guess if you have the money, you could always shell out some cash for those dino ornaments on offer, so you can finally do the Jurassic Park RP of your dreams in Destiny 2. Really, if you’re actively playing this season, you definitely benefit the most from this event, as you can hoard tons of materials from all the junk you’ll definitely accumulate from working towards those pages.

Whatever you decide to do, keep in mind that the scariest part of Festival of the Lost is the fact that there are somehow more ways for Bungie to separate you from your money. Aside from that, enjoy the festival, Guardians.
