Destiny 2: The Witch Queen details revealed

It’s here. The next Destiny 2 expansion, The Witch Queen, has finally been revealed. After so much waiting and scraps of information and millions of threads of lore hounds speculating on the story of the next expansion, we’ve finally gotten our first official look at the game. Destiny 2 has been going through some changes over the past year or so, as there has been a grander focus on the overarching story that has been built over seasons (albeit locked behind a paywall).

As of late, the story of the game has been building to something massive, and it definitely seems like this new season (which is available right now) is only going to continue the excellent storytelling of the past two seasons. I’m hoping we get something pretty crazy this season because it seems like Bungie is bringing the big guns for The Witch Queen.

The Witch is dead…not really

The reveal trailer gives us a creepy swamp, Savathun’s spooky voice, and….fucking light-infused hive? This is a pretty stunning turn of events, as we seem to be dealing with an enemy that is using our power against us. Void, solar, and arc Hive-Guardians appear to face our own Guardians before the trailer ends; in the gameplay trailer, we see that our new enemies, known as the Lucent Brood, have powers similar to our own.

Solar knives, void shields, and the good old lighting zaps are being flung our way this time, with Hive-Ghosts floating around waiting to die. A new weapon type is going to be introduced in The Witch Queen, The Glave, a new melee weapon that will be used in the first person. All of these weapons are being used in the midst of some really beautiful environments; if nothing else, Savathun’s Throne World looks absolutely breathtaking when compared to Europa.

All the new features Bungie have shown with this stream have looked pretty promising and the story beats look pretty cool. Light-infused enemies have been part of many online discussions so seeing it be realized for the near future is really exciting. We have more information about the Lucent Brood waiting for us in the future, so we just have to be patient for Papa Bungie to feed us more delicious details.

The Witch Queen is looking great, but so did Beyond Light, so keep your expectations for Destiny 2 in check, Guardians, as not everything has been revealed yet. As someone who’s been around since The Taken King age, I can tell you that when things are good, they’re really fucking good. But don’t have unrealistic expectations; keep your head out of the clouds with tenuous stuff like Destiny expansions. Be excited but maybe keep your wallet in check until we get more details about the new content.
