After all the big revelations about the next update, “Floating World Under the Moonlight”, miHoYo finally announced the next playable character for Genshin Impact: Thoma, Protector from Afar. Following their recent pattern for revealing new characters, he will be coming during the 2.2 update.

Thoma was the first character we met when we first arrived in Inazuma, and helped us to legally reside in the city. I mean, until he was captured by the Tenryou Commission and we had to go save him, making the Traveler a wanted criminal in Inazuma City for raising his/her hand against the Shogun.

From what we’ve seen in the story and from the official announcement, Thoma will be a Pyro character. Previous leaks indicated him as a Polearm user, but this is subject to change. Albedo is a good example, since he was initially reserved as a Geo Bow user, but ended up wielding a Sword in the final game.

As for his rarity, he is speculated to be a 4-star character. He would be the first male 4-star to be launched since the game’s release, and Gorou is supposedly the next one to ramp up the playable male cast.

As fans previously have guessed, Thoma is not originally from Inazuma, having been born in Mondstadt. This opens up for some future event in which he meets people from his own land. His character’s story will soon tell how he ended up living in the Japanese-inspired islands of Inazuma.

Aside from the fact that he is coming in the 2.2 update (scheduled for October 12), we don’t know which banner he will be featured in.

The 2.2 version is being speculated to be a rerun-only update, similar to 1.4. If he ends up being a 4-star, he would be featured in a possible Albedo, Ganyu or Hu Tao banner.

Following the 2.3 version onwards, he will always be available for wishing in every banner.

Genshin Impact is currently at the end of its 2.0 version, “The Immovable God and the Eternal Euthymia”, which brought us the Inazuma region. It was the biggest update yet, and introduced three new areas, many new enemies, weapons, materials, bosses and characters to enjoy.

You can play the game for free on mobile devices (Android and iOS), PCs through both the miHoYo launcher or the Epic Games Store launcher, Playstation 4 and Playstation 5. A Nintendo Switch version is stated to be in development.
