How to open and close Portals in Splitgate on PC

open and close Portals in Splitgate

Splitgate is styled as a mix of Portal’s traversal mechanic and Halo-like shooter gameplay, so knowing how to open and close portals is key.

How to open new portals in Splitgate on PC

Opening a new portal in Splitgate is quite easy, you just need to press Q or E for each portal respectively while aiming at one of these blue grid-textured surfaces. Be aware that you can only open portals on this specific surface, so keep an eye out for them.

Q opens your first portal by default, while E opens the second one in Splitgate. Using the same key again will replace the respective portal when you make a new one.

How to close your portals

On to the second half of how to open and close Portals in Splitgate. Portals can always be closed by their owner by pressing the Z and X keys, unless they are currently dead anyway – though they’ll close automatically shortly after you die anyway.

Just as with opening portals with the Q and E keys, Z and X will close their own portal respectively, but cannot close both. Z will close a portal made by Q, while X is responsible for closing E portals.

This allows you to quickly close a specific portal to prevent someone from chasing you through it after you make a quick escape or just plain shooting you through it. There is no keybind by default for shutting down both portals immediately, though the portal closing animation is quite fast, so closing both using each key separately isn’t really an issue in the first place.

Closing enemy portals in Splitgate

While you can’t open the two portals belonging to each of your teammates or enemies individually, you can close down enemy portals. This is done via the grenades in Splitgate, which are thrown by the G key by default.

Note that Splitgate grenades do absolutely zero damage to players, they are purely for closing portals. This is very unusual at first to the likes of Halo players, with whom Splitgate has considerable pull due to gameplay similarities.

You may need to adjust the angle you throw for further distances, but grenades only detonate on contact, so it’s simply a matter of learning the angles to throw at for different distances to close any portals – that you can see, at least. You don’t need a precise hit, being close to the portal is enough to shut them down.

And no, you cannot use grenades to close allied portals. Though it would definitely be useful sometimes, because it seems allies either always close their portals or never do so, there is absolutely no in-between.
