Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V), there is hardly anyone who hasn’t heard about this game. Born in the hand of Rockstar North, this game still maintains its reputation and its player base.

It’s been a long time since the game was released. We witnessed a lot of updates. But, the game started to show its ages, especially in the graphics department. Well, you thought that. If you are one of the guys who think the same, there might be good news for you.

Intel’s Intelligent System Labs (ISL) took a project to make synthetic images look more lively. Titled “Enhancing Photorealism Enhancement“, ISL shared a bit of detail on May 10. They also added a few comments about the project.

We present an approach to enhancing the realism of synthetic images. The images are enhanced by a convolutional network that leverages intermediate representations produced by conventional rendering pipelines. The network is trained via a novel adversarial objective, which provides strong supervision at multiple perceptual levels

ISL shared additional data and code related to the project on GitHub. They said that ISL can offer a substantial gain in stability and realism including change in various baseline.

They also added,

We also introduce multiple architectural improvements in the deep network modules used for photorealism enhancement. We confirm the benefits of our contributions in controlled experiments and report substantial gains in stability and realism in comparison to recent image-to-image translation methods and a variety of other baselines.

They shared a picture of GTA V with us demonstrating what kinda change their AI can make.

Amazing, isn’t it? We know. We are stepping towards realism in games even if it’s just a bit. The results intel showed are stunning. They shared their code and additional related data on GitHub. Maybe someone smart enough could use their findings and use it to improve the graphics in-game while everyone is waiting for Rockstar to release GTA VI.
