If you’re a series regular, you’ll know all about the Weapon Degradation systems in play in any Monster Hunter title.

Much like you have to keep an eye on your Health Bar and your Stamina Bar, you’ll also notice another slowly-depleting bar in Monster Hunter Rise. This essentially tracks the quality of your weapon and the lower it is, the less effective it will be in battle.

Below, we have everything you need to know about combatting this in Monster Hunter Rise with a whetstone.

The Whetstone In Monster Hunter Rise

Weapon Degradation is a pain in the… You know. If you are going after a particularly tough opponent under a time constraint, you’ll definitely need to make sure your weapon is as efficient as it can be.

If you want to sort out your weapon and “sharpen your blade”, so to speak, you can do this out and about and you don’t need to be back at base camp.

In order to move to the Whetstone in your inventory, you’ll need to hold down L and then press either A or Y to scroll through your items one way or the other.

Eventually, you’ll come across your Whetstone and from here all you need to do is hold down the Y Button. It’s worth noting, you’ll need to make sure your weapon is sheathed to do this.

Sharpening your weapon and combating Weapon Degradation isn’t an instantaneous process, so make sure you’re in a fairly safe spot to do it. Alternatively, you can do this from the back of the Palamute mount, if that’s more your style.

It might take you a few moments to get a feel for how long this takes, but when you can gauge how long you’ll need to sharpen your weapon with a Whetstone in Monster Hunter Rise, you’ll be able to fit it into tighter spots and keep your weapon as efficient as it can be throughout a hunt.
