When Did Friday Night Funkin Come Out?
So, it has come to my attention that the question which heads this article is asked quite a bit. When did Friday Night Funkin come out? Upon hanging around with some of my pals and playing Friday Night Funkin, one of us randomly posed the question, and I realized I didn’t know myself.
Obviously in late 2020 and early 2021 the game made its home on YouTube recommendation pages and on Twitch streams, but it always felt like the game existed for a bit. I believe I heard of the game around the time popular youtuber Critikal released his video on the game, and it only had up to Week 4 at the time (of streaming, the Youtube video was released around Week 6). With only 7 weeks currently in the game though, clearly there was a good bit of game done even when I’d heard of the game comparably early.
As it turns out, the release date is listed as October 5th, 2020, as this was the earliest build of the game submitted to Ludum Dare 47. In short, it acts as a game making contest, but this early build of Friday Night Funkin only featured Week 1 and no navigable menus. With near universal positive reception, a more full build was released on November 1st with Week 2 and menus. Weeks 3 and 4 were both made available in December, while Weeks 5 and 6 were released in late January and early February respectively.

If I had to take a guess, Weeks 5 and 6 were around when the game was getting universal attention and mod support. The release of Week 7 in mid April was so huge that it crashed Newgrounds upon release. As Week 7’s update was and still is Newgrounds exclusive, fans had to wait a day to reliably play the new Week’s content.
The successfully crowdfunded Kickstarter project promises a Full Ass Game, which is estimated to be release in early 2022. All that being said, I think that answers about every possible question regarding when Friday Night Funkin came out!
