Amazon’s new MMO New World has hit the ground running, becoming the best PC launch of 2021 with over 700,000 concurrent players.

Many players are having issues with the servers during the first few days of the New World launch, so ideally it is better to stay in-game while you need to go AFK because there is no telling when you will be able to get back in the game. At the time of writing this, I have been stuck in a queue for over four hours.

While Amazon certainly doesn’t want you to go AFK and stay in the server, because that takes up a space that another player could be in, it is possible to do assuming you don’t get kicked for another server issue.

How To Go AFK In New World

Trying to get into a New World server at the minute is very hit and miss, you might get in within minutes or you could be trying for hours.

So, if you need to jump off for a little while but will be back online soon then logging off isn’t a very viable option because who knows when you’ll get in a server again.

New World has an idle timer of 20 minutes, meaning if you don’t perform any actions in the game for 20 minutes you will be kicked from the server and set back to the main menu.

To counter this, you can make the game continuously perform actions so it thinks you’re playing. This allows you to stop playing without leaving the game.

By pressing the = (equals) button, it sets your character to autorun, this is handy if you’re running somewhere far as it allows you to not have to hold W.

This can also be used to prevent you from being kicked from a server for being idle.

The easiest way to do this is to go into a house, such as the Inn at Everfall. Go to a wall and press = to autorun into it.

It is best to do it somewhere safe like a house because if you do it in the wild you risk being attacked by an enemy.

As the character is continuously running the game thinks you are playing and performing actions, so it won’t kick you for going AFK.

Another option is to perform the sit emote by pressing P to open the emote menu and then selecting sit.

This emote is continuous like autorunning and will prevent you from being kicked for being idle.

You do still run the risk of the server being timed out, which has happened to me while I was AFK, but if you need to step away for a short time, or want to play in between doing other tasks, this is certainly the best way to do it right now.

Once the servers stop being as overloaded, which will naturally happen at the player count drops, or Amazon improves the server capacity, then this won’t be as much of an issue because you’ll be able to get back into the server quickly.
