Pokemon Go has something of a rotating cast for its 5-star raids and it’s about time that Incarnate Forme Thundurus got back into the action.
It’ll be a bit of a short-lived return, but this is all part of the Season of Legends event and the build-up to the release of Therian Formes, which will be new to Pokemon Go.
When does it happen?
Incarnate Forme Thundurus will be returning to Pokemon Go from the 11th of March at 8:00 AM local time to the 16th of march, at 10:00 AM local time.
As mentioned above, it’s a bit of a short-lived return, with only about 5 days to work with to get as many of him as you want.
With that said, there is a raid hour in that time window which is expected to feature Incarnate Forme Thundurus, so you should have a good number of chances to add them to your collection.
Is the Shiny available?
Yes, actually. Incarnate Forme Thundurus’ shiny version will be available during these raids. If you’d like to compare it to the non-shiny variant, I’ve included an image below.
To be honest, I find this shiny a bit of a hard sell – it doesn’t look particularly amazing. It does look more visually distinct than the shiny for another recent raid Pokemon that I won’t name, which is a plus, I suppose.

How do I fight Thundurus?
You’ll need to find Thundurus in raids during the period they return, and you’ll likely want a team of at least 3 players – though I’d expect the average team fighting him will be closer to 5 or 6 players.
With the team size out of the way, lets get into the specifics of fighting with Thudurus in Pokemon Go.
What moves can Thundurus know?
Fast Attacks:
- Astonish
- Thunder Shock
Charged Attacks:
- Brick Break
- Crunch
- Thunder
- Thunder Punch
What types are effective?
Thundurus is an Electric/Flying dual-type, which is annoying as the Electric typing gives it coverage from the electric weakness of flying.
That particular little detail actually grants him a very short weakness list, consisting of only two types,
- Ice
- and Rock
That’s right, only two total weaknesses. You’ll also want to avoid moves of all the following, as he is resistant to these:
- Bug
- Fighting
- Flying
- Grass
- Ground
- Steel

Pokemon Recommendations
So, what might be good ideas to take with you to fight Thundurus? Well, surprisingly we do have a few good options, despite his resistance list.
Rampardos makes an excellent choice to open with, if equipped with double rock moves, though you have to be careful around brick break, it’ll hit hard. Similarly, Mamoswine is a good choice if dual equipped with ice attacks.
Raid classics such as Tyranitar and Rhyperior will also deal some serious damage here, though keep an eye out for brick break as it’ll hurt like hell if it connects with you – and stick to Rock-type moves!
If you don’t have any of these specific Pokemon, Weavile was available in large numbers recently and makes for a strong ice type. Glaceon can also be a solid choice – neither are particularly durable but both can do a fair amount of damage.

Additionally, Mewtwo is always a strong generalist pokemon and could make good use of Ice beam here – Mewtwo is decent for almost all raids in truth, but few raids have this much weakness coverage, which makes Mewtwo increase in priority.
That’s about it for this piece on the upcoming return of Thundurus. Good luck trainers, it looks like we may all need it for this one.
