Weird Pokemon Evolution Methods 2: Electric Boogaloo

Its been nearly three months since our last look at some of the weird Pokemon evolution methods the series has to offer. Those all were examples of gen 6 Pokemon, though, and the series certainly has more. For better or worse…

3. Nincada and Mantyke

While these two Pokemon don’t evolve in the exact same way, they’re pretty similar in essence. When Nincada evolves into Ninjask at level 20, if there is a spare slot in your party and a Poke Ball in your bag, a Shedinja will join the party. Mantyke, however, evolves into Mantine upon level up with a Remoraid in the party.

I figured these two worked nicely together having evolutions which involve other presences or lack thereof in the party. These were some of the earliest endeavors into the weird Pokemon evolution methods, so I figured they deserved a spot here before some of the true oddballs.

2. Milcery

Pokemon Sword and Shield, and its Galar forms specifically, ramped up the odd evolution methods up to eleven. Milcery, a non Galar form Pokemon, couldn’t escape this fate either. While it may not be HARD to evolve, it is odd and requires a bit of research.

If given a sweet as a held item, Milcery will evolve after spinning around and striking a pose on the overworld into Alcremie. This wouldn’t be… too odd were it not for the fact that Alcremie’s appearance changes not only by the sweet given to Milcery, but also the time of day, direction, and duration of spinning your Trainer.

1. Galarian Yamask

To take the cake for maybe the most odd evolution method so far, we have Galarian Yamask! Pokemon has had location based evolutions before with the Moss and Ice Rocks before, but never before had it also introduced weirdly specific HP requirements.

If Galarian Yamask takes 49 damage in a battle (from an opposing Pokemon specifically) without fainting, then is brought under the Dusty Bowl, it will evolve into Runerigus. Theoretically, then, Galarian Yamask can evolve as soon as it has 50 total HP and can vary by level.
