Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls is a mobile game featuring some of the fan-favorite characters from the series. Initially released back in 2019, the servers were closed after only 1 year. But now, the game is coming back from its grave.

Konami officially announced the game earlier today, and it will be coming exclusively for the Apple Arcade subscription service. The game already has a download page on the App Store, specifying that the game will be available only for iOS, tvOS and Mac.

During its first release, Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls had some development problems and not so many positive reviews.

That, along with the fact that it was only available in Canada, made the servers being shut down even before the game had a Global release.

Is Grimoire of Souls related to the other Castlevania games?

The game follows an original story that includes elements from the other games. A promotional page for the re-release is already up. The official synopsis is the following:

“A future where Count Dracula has been completely destroyed. It seemed like eternal peace came upon the world.
However, a letter delivered to Genya Arikado was about to put an end to that peaceful era.
In order to verify the meaning of the words written in the letter—“The Grimoire has ran wild and Count Dracula will be resurrected”—Genya Arikado heads off towards the letter’s sender…”

The gameplay was based on the original Castlevania titles, fighting enemies in a side-scroller stage using your characters’ special abilities. The character roster is confirmed to be the same as the original release.

We can play as important figures of the series, such as Alucard, Simon Belmont, Maria Renold, Genya Arikado, Charlotte, and Shanoa. Players can also summon other characters as supports, such as Albus, Jonathan, Ritcher, and even Trevor Belmont.

The game featured a gacha system, but it was only required for equipment since you’ll unlock the characters gradually as you play through the game.

We should expect this system to come back. Since this is a re-release, most of the old problems were probably fixed.

While no Android release has been announced, it may not take too long until Konami decides to make a port for it. Castlevania got a nice popularity boost thanks to the Netflix series, and it would be a waste to not go for a wider audience.
