Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water coming to Nintendo Switch

Fatal Frame on the Switch? Sign me the fuck up, cause holy crap, this is gonna be an overdue one for horror fans. Now, Maiden of Black Water isn’t the most revered entry in the series, but its great that we’re getting something from the series as its been on ice for god knows how long.

Fatal Frame is a series that holds a special place in my heart, only overshadowed by the other spooky game that holds an even bigger place in my heart, Silent Hill. You aren’t some poor schmuck stuck in a spooky town, being haunted by both the sins of the inhabitants and of your own making; you usually play as a lone individual or individuals that enter a super haunted location armed with nothing but a magic camera that can help fight ghosts.

The first three games have been a massive part of horror game canon, as they capture beautifully brooding, uncomfortable locations and have the player fight ghosts inside of them. The first entry, Fatal Frame could be written off as a Resident Evil clone, as it had many similarities to the zombie blasting series. Ever since the second game, however, the series carved out its own identity as that J-Horror alternative to Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water was originally a game for the Wii U, a console that not many understood and the few who did got made fun of for supporting a weird looking console. It was a solid piece of hardware that had lots of great games like Xenoblade Chronicles X, The Wonderful 101, and even Bayonetta 2.

Maiden of Black Water wasn’t super revered on release as it had lots of strange additions to established formula of the series while also using the Wii U’s gimmick of having a second portable screen to take picture of ghosts. The gameplay really got you up close and personal with the spooky spirits that haunted mountain vistas and decrepit Japanese homes.

Nintendo re-releasing this Fatal Frame entry for the Switch is a good move, as we’ve been starved of J-Horror goodness for a long while right now. The game is looking good with its controls being adapted for the Switch’s Joy-Con set-up, as it seems like we’ll be missing that use of the second screen (for obvious reasons).

Hopefully, if this re-release is successful, there could be the potential for re-releases of the other games, which are only playable on the PS3 digitally. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water will be releasing on the Nintendo Switch sometime this year.
