It’s no surprise that there are rumors that GTA 6 might have cryptocurrency integrated into the game somehow. To quickly clarify, I don’t mean you’ll be getting Dogecoin dropped into your virtual wallet every time you commit a crime, but that it will exist as in-game system that the player will have to manage somehow.

Grand Theft Auto is a series that has always had its finger on the pulse of the beating heart of American culture. Even if it’s a bit on the nose at times, it has never been a stranger to tackling contemporary topics that pertain specifically to the states.

From immigration to the legalization of marijuana, there hasn’t been a topic the series has been afraid to tackle. So cryptocurrency being something implemented in some form in the GTA universe isn’t too far out of the question right?

According to trusted Battlefield leaker Tom Henderson, GTA 6 might include cryptocurrency as a method of payment from other characters.

This sort of thing is definitely something that Rockstar would include in the next GTA. In GTA 5, you had the stock market that you could play around with, as well as a smartphone that had various apps that the player could use.

There was a definite emphasis on tapping into the zeitgeist of the internet at the time, as in the mid-2010s was when smartphones and the internet were really blowing up in popularity.

Right now, even with it being in a constant state of flux, cryptocurrency is incredibly popular with people and is a hot topic all over the internet. As far as contemporary topics go, cryptocurrency is definitely something big right now.

So, you might be wondering, what’s the big deal? So Rockstar puts cryptocurrency into GTA 6 in some form. What about it? Well, like Tom Henderson says, if Rockstar implements this right, this could potentially be big for cryptocurrency in regard to how ordinary people view it.

Depending on what context cryptocurrency exists in the game, perception can definitely shift either negatively or positively.

As it is now, cryptocurrency exists as an oddity to ordinary people and a potentially exciting investment for people with some extra money to gamble with.

Normalizing cryptocurrency in a game as big as GTA 6 could potentially increase interest and maybe even push more investments into the myriad of currencies available today.

Will the implementation portray cryptocurrency as a form of payment that normal people can use? Or will it be shown as the easiest way for criminals to pay each other without leaving much of a paper trail?

Spoiler alert, it’ll probably be both, cause crypto is definitely being used by shady individuals on the internet and by people with some extra cash.

We’ll just have to wait and see if GTA 6 is gonna be endorsed by Elon Musk upon release.
