Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and the rescue from digital jail

Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is something from the deep recesses of my childhood that has never gone away. I still remember getting bodied by a kid who used a team composed of only Cable. Lots of quarters were lost as a child, but I didn’t care (my parents totally did though) because the game was an incredible time. If you never had the privilege of playing MVC2, then you’ve really been missing out on one of the wackiest fighting games to ever grace video games.

An incredible step up from the original game, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is just more of what everyone loved of the original. More fighters, an extra parter to tag in, even faster gameplay, and various additions to the fighting system have resulted in one of the fastest and kinetic games to ever exist. After an arcade run, it had several console releases, with its last release being on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Due to some legal shenanigans though, the digital release of the game has since then been pulled off of digital shelves.

Since then, there has been no way to legally play Marvel Vs Capcom 2 on modern systems without having already owned the game when it was still available. Suffice it to say but many have been really unhappy with this turn of events.

Enter the Dood

Recently, there has been a massive push headed by YouTuber Maximillian Dood to return the game in some form to digital storefronts.

One of the prominent voices for fighting games on YouTube, Maximillian Dood’s call to action is significant, as the hashtag #FREEMVC2 was trending on Twitter at some point. When you even have big names in the FGC like Justin Wong pushing the hashtag along, you know that the cause has some significant ground to stand on. The attempt to pull MVC2 “out of jail” has even gotten the attention of Digital Eclipse, a company that specializes in game preservation and the one that ported MVC2 while still known as Backbone Entertainment.

Mike Mika, Studio Head at Digital Eclipse, made his support for Max’s cause well known:

The fact that Mike Mika is laying out all the things MVC2 would need for its re-release gives me hope personally that a project like this would be successful if it was greenlit. The mention of GGPO (a rollback system for fighting games) also shows that Mike is fully aware of the kinds of feature fighting games need to succeed in this online landscape. Without a doubt, DIgital Eclipse would be the right people to re-release MVC2 for the modern age.

I think there’s a pretty good chance of MVC2 getting re-released with all of this attention being heaped onto it from notable people in the scene. It remains to be seen though if the right hands start making moves to put this on modern consoles. We’re in a sort of renaissance for fighting games at the moment, so the return of an old favorite would be a sight to behold.

Given that we’re still gonna be quarantining and social distancing for a long while, a new online game to play wouldn’t be the worst thing, especially if it’s a game that’s been off of the shelves for almost a decade now. If MVC2 does come back, it’ll be the perfect time to learn how to do a fuckin infinite.

Fingers crossed.
