According to a few recent leaks, there might be a new Donkey Kong game on the way that is being worked on at Nintendo EPD, who worked on Super Mario Odyssey.

The Donkey Kong series has not had a new entry since Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which was originally released in 2014 on the Wii U and ported to the Switch in 2018.

The rumors come from a few different sources picked up by Nintendo Life, but most of it is pretty much only a rumor at this point without any official confirmations but the rumors are picking up fast. A few people on Twitter have discussed the rumors, as well as Nintendo Life stating they heard the same rumors from a trusted source to back up the possible legitimacy of it.

A source that may have the best information on this rumor is Zippo, who wrote a blog post on Nintendo’s upcoming projects for 2021, including projects that have already been announced and others that are still rumors. Zippo said this of the possibility of an upcoming Donkey Kong game:

“It’s the big ape’s 40th anniversary, and while I’m not sure how Nintendo is celebrating the occasion, there is a new 2D DK game being developed by EPD Tokyo. Retro is obviously busy with other things, so Nintendo has taken it upon themselves to bring DK back in as internal series. Don’t expect the “Country” moniker to return, as EPD Tokyo are not interested in making a sequel to games they didn’t make. Diddy, Cranky and the Kremling Krew should all be returning in this installment. It sounds like this game is launching before the end of the year. An E3 announcement seems very likely.”

Considering there aren’t many games coming out this year that are being developed by Nintendo in-house (except some ports and remakes, including Miitopia and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword), it wouldn’t be surprising to see that they are working on a new Donkey Kong game.

The last few Donkey Kong games were developed by Retro Studios, who are also working on the upcoming Metroid Prime 4. Besides Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars, it has been quite some time since Nintendo directly developed a Donkey Kong game.

A new Donkey Kong game would certainly please a lot of fans considering there hasn’t been a new game in the series since 2014. It is possible we will know more on the subject when E3 arrives in June.
