Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale mode first seen in Activision’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare. The mode was added as free-to-play option available for all players, regardless of whether or not you paid for the full game. Players could opt-in to buy the game to gain access to Campaign, Multiplayer, and Spec Ops, but could jump into Verdansk for free any time. Now, it seems that Activision’s sister company, Blizzard, might make the highly-anticipated Overwatch 2 free-to-play as well.
Developers around the world took note of the success of Warzone’s format, and now it seems like another titan in the industry is planning to adopt the latest model. Overwatch 2 doesn’t have a release date quite yet, but what it does have is the potential to follow in Warzone’s footsteps.

According to rumours, Overwatch 2 will have a free-to-play player versus player mode, akin to its classic gameplay in Overwatch 1. Any player versus enemy, single player, or other modes may still be locked behind a premium purchase, however, similar to how Modern Warfare works.
What does this mean for Overwatch 2 players? If the format is followed in its entirety, we can expect to see Overwatch 2 have the tried and true F2P format of seasons and battle passes, meaning constant new content. Further, the PvP mode being free is a staple of popular e-sports titles nowadays, a market that Blizzard loves to capitalize on.
