PUBG is a game I never got too into, but can understand why someone would want to cheat to win matches. It’s a battle royale game where one small mistake can cost you a match, so gettting frustrated is not uncommon for most that play such games. The frustration is so bad that it can definitely turn people onto cheating in online competitive games.

Cheating has always been a huge part of video games; it’s existed since the earliest NES games had Cheat Genie to help less than skilled gamers out with tough spots (looking at you, Ninja Gaiden). However, when people think of cheating these days, they usually refer to special tools that can give someone an edge in an online competitive game. It’s pretty common for popular multiplayer games to be inundated with cheaters, especially if they’re free.

PUBG isn’t a free game but has its fair share of cheaters; imagine if for a fee you could be given a tool that would allow you to win games with ease. It’d probably be the best feeling in the world, getting one over those tryhards that make getting better at the game exponentially hard. However, as the saying goes, cheaters never prosper, and sometimes they can face some serious jail time.

According to VICE Gaming, illustrious cheat dev team Cheat Ninja has been recently terminated due to the efforts of the Kunshan Police and Tencent. Two of the salespeople that were closely associated with the focus of the article, a person with the alias “Catfish,” were arrested and jailed for being part of the cheat dev team.

Catfish notes that he caught wind of his associates’ fates and quickly resolved to purge all of the information related to cheat development. Purging servers and smashing hard drives were the last thing Catfish did before taking off on the run.

In the aftermath of Cheat Ninja’s demise, Catfish made his future intentions clear to VICE Gaming:

I’m quitting this pay-to-cheat scene. I no longer need to make money through this, and it was too much stress fighting all these anti-cheats, competitors, scammers, crackers, etc. not to mention the cops,” Catfish said. “I may still make cheats but only for myself and a few friends.”

Catfish’s tone makes it clear that he finds the cheat dev scene too stressful and dangerous to continue making cheats for monetary gain. Towards the end of the article, Catfish makes it known that he’s looking forward to playing other games going forward.

Cheater, cheater, chicken-eater

Cheating is something that has only grown as competitive gaming has become more prevalent over the years. High-profile controversies involving pro-gamers cheating to win are not uncommon, as money is a pretty good motivator to turn to cheat.

More so, working on creating cheat services is a gamble that can pay off greatly if the participants are willing to risk getting sued into oblivion by some big company. As mentioned in the VICE article, Cheat Ninja was making millions of dollars selling cheats for PUBG to players.

The lucrative nature of the business makes it tantalizing for amateur programmers to try and get their foot in the door, as there are always people that will want to have a good time cheating. As mentioned before, the difficulty of games such as PUBG can compel people to turn to cheating, as the skill ceiling is really high.

Getting better at these games is hard because its hard to learn when most of the time you’re just dying from some guy sitting across the map with a sniper rifle. However, if you wanna avoid losing all your money and wasting your time looking for ways to win easy, be willing to claw your way up to that skill ceiling.

Until you get there, enjoy the taste of steel. Forgo that PUBG cheat. It’ll be better than the pain of emptying your wallet cause of legal fees.
