Remake developer Bluepoint Games acquired by PlayStation

Last Updated on: 1st October 2021, 01:23 am

It’s finally happened, as Bluepoint Games is officially part of PlayStation after an acquisition took place as of September 30th, 2021.

Bluepoint Games has been the most important partner PlayStation has worked with, as they’ve been responsible for some of the best graphical remakes that PlayStation consoles have ever had. From the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection to their most recent project, the PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls, Bluepoint Games has been absolutely killing it by bringing older games onto newer consoles.

They started on the PlayStation 3 and have stuck around since, but we’ve only ever seen them create ports and HD remakes; without a doubt, they’re talented at what they do, but Bluepoint Games haven’t really done a project that was wholly theirs. They can make some gorgeous remakes of some of your favorite games, but they haven’t had the opportunity to really flex their talents in a project that they can call their own.

Thankfully, we’ll be able to see something soon.

On their blog, PlayStation announced the acquisition of Bluepoint Games, praising their talent in their past projects and acknowledging the amount of time they’ve worked together. Hermen Hulst, CEO of PlayStation Studios wrote the following:

Today I’m very excited to announce that PlayStation Studios has grown again with the addition of long-time partner Bluepoint Games!…With each of its projects, Bluepoint has raised the bar on console-defining visuals and gameplay, and the studio’s vast expertise in world building and character creation will be a huge plus for future PlayStation Studios properties….Welcome to the PlayStation Studios family, Bluepoint!

In the same blog, Bluepoint Games’ President, Marco Thrush, speaks about the acquisition and how excited they are to be an official part of PlayStation as opposed to just being a partner:

We’re thrilled to have officially joined PlayStation Studios!…PlayStation has such an iconic gaming catalog and for us there’s been nothing better than to bring some of gaming’s masterpieces to new players. Becoming a part of PlayStation Studios, empowers our team to raise the quality-bar even further and create even more impactful experiences for the PlayStation community…

Judging by the level of quality that Bluepoint Games operates on, this acquisition can hopefully allow them to spread their wings and really soar with a unique project of their own. While the remasters have been fantastic, it’d be nice to see what sort of games Bluepoint Games can create when they have the backing of one of gaming’s biggest companies. Only time will tell if the acquisition was the best thing or worst thing that’s ever happened to the studio.

Hopefully, we won’t have another casualty like Visceral Games and instead, we get something like Santa Monica Studio.
