Edge of Eternity Early Access

If you are an RPG fan, you may have heard about Midgar Studio’s Edge of Eternity, a title that promises to blend fantasy and sci-fi in a campaign deeply personal and full of amazing moments.

With that in mind, we decided to jump right into its world and took part in the game’s Early Access phase. Here are our thoughts:

Before we Begin

Before we start, it’s good to point out that the title is still in its Early Access phase, so even if there are bugs, or areas that are in need of polishing, you need to keep in mind that what you are playing is not the finished product, but a work in progress and will be improved greatly until its release date.

The Game’s Setting

The events of the game take place in the continent of Heryon, years after the beginning of a war against the Archelites, a race of invaders that are keen on decimating the continent and taking control of the planet.

For that, they unleashed their strongest weapon, the Corrosion.

In the game, we take control of Daryon, an ex-soldier, that embarks on a journey together with his sister, the priestess Selene, in search of a cure for the Corrosion.

Environment, Combat, and Mechanics

The first thing that caught my eye when playing was the graphics.

Composed of beautiful character models and involvements, which can vary from normal snow-filled mountains to fantasy-filled caverns and forests, and finally, to cities filled with NPCs, and more. All pulsing to be explored.

The core of every great RPG is on its characters, and Edge of Eternity has a great assembly, whose interactions seem real and fun to watch.

The banter between Darion and Selene being some of the highlights of the experience.

Its combat, which can be categorized as Strategic Turn-Based, is fun and intuitive.

Outside the battles, the game works as a normal RPG, where players can attack monsters, take quests, interact with the world, and solve puzzles.

The game’s soundtrack deserves to be highlighted as well since it delivers a selection of exciting and beautiful melodies.

It’s also worth noting that Yasunori Mitsuda, known for his work on Chrono Trigger, is one of the composers behind it.

Another one of the game’s differentials is in its crystal mechanic, in which characters can equip their weapons with different power-infused crystals, giving them a boost in their stats and different abilities.

Necessary Improvements

With all said, the game, as it is right now, presents a few problems. For example, the presence of bugs, which can, on a few occasions, force you to restart the application, or maybe even your playthrough if you are unlucky.

The need for polishing in some areas is clear, with can be seen in some of the character’s movements, on the camerawork during a few battles, on the look of some of the game’s NPCs, and in some of the game’s transitions and cutscenes.

A little twerk in its mini-map and on a few of the icons present in the game would also be a welcoming addition to the title.

It’s good to point out that the game lets you report the bugs and problems directly to the team, and offers an in-game option, that can, in some cases, help you get unstuck.

A Great Game, Filled With Potential

Edge of Eternity is a great RPG, with beautiful graphics, filled with vivid and vibrant involvements, great characters, and a great history. Not only that, but the game has an interface sure to please fans of the style, a deep battle system, charismatic protagonists, and a LOT of promise.

That aside, a few problems in its performance and the lack of polishing in some areas hurts the experience overall, making it pretty clear that it’s still a work in progress.

You can check the games official Early Acess trailer below, together with its official synopsis:

”The world of Heryon is torn apart. Years ago, the arrival of a mysterious alien force ultimately plunged the planet into an endless cataclysmic war where both magic and technology were unleashed to their worst and darkest extremes.
Now an even greater threat has emerged : in a despicable act of war, the invaders released the Corrosion, a fatal disease turning living forms of all kinds into misshapen abominations.

In these desperate times, a young soldier will have to face his destiny and embark on an epic journey that will change the fate of Heryon forever…”

You can play the game right now on Steam Early Access.
