Returnal is one of the first titles for the PlayStation 5 to be published by Sony, and their first brand new IP during the next-generation.

The game is an action-packed sci-fi shooter with some unique elements that will allow for a very fun and replayable experience.

Here is everything you need to know.

Release Date

Returnal was originally due to launch on March 19th 2021, but it was delayed until April 30th to allow for extra time to polish the game.

Platforms

Returnal will be releasing exclusively on PlayStation 5. Despite being published by Sony it will by bypassing PS4, making it one of the first games on PS5 to not make an appearance on last-gen.

This is due to the use of many PS5 exclusive features such as Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback, as well as to try and allow for instant loading.

A Unique Gameplay Mechanic

Returnal is a third-person sci-fi shooter with intense and fast paced top-down arcade style of shooting, basically bullets will rain down on anything that moves.

There is a very unique element to the game in that, each time the player dies, the planet will change including the items you find.

This offers a very unique playthrough every time which add a lot replayability to the game.

3D Audio

The PlayStation 5 has many features that are new to the next-gen system, here we will be taking a look at how they’re implemented into the game.

3D audio will allow players to experience the sounds in the game in a realistic fashion. From bullets flying past the player and being able to hear enemies based on where they are to the player.

This should make the game very immersive and will be one of the first times we’ve seen use of it on the system.

Haptic Feedback

Players will be able to utilize haptic feedback to sense in-game actions or get unique each recoil and feedback depending on which weapon you’re firing.

Adaptive Triggers

Firing weapons will be a bit more unique in Returnal.

Players can hold down the trigger button one way to fire the gun in a standard fashion, while pushing it down further will use the weapons alternative fire mode.

Instant Loading

Thanks to the PS5’s NVME SSD drive, loading times will be near instant, allowing new worlds to load immediately as well as not needing to wait to jump back into the action after dying.
