When does Black Widow take place in the MCU?

Disney released a second trailer for Black Widow early last month to get the hype back up for their first feature film in over a year. After numerous delays, the movie is finally set to be released in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9. So, when exactly does Black Widow take place?

Unless you live under a rock, you should know at this point that, spoilers, Black Widow definitely died during Avengers: Endgame so her getting a solo movie afterwards may seem a bit strange.

When Does Black Widow Take Place?

No, Natasha is not getting resurrected by some higher power in the MCU. From what we’ve seen in the trailers, the movie is a prequel story set before the events of Endgame. The only question is: when exactly does Black Widow take place in the MCU?

At Comic-Con 2019, IGN interviewed actor David Harbour who plays Red Guardian in the film. Harbour stated, “This movie happens right after Captain America: Civil War, and so those events do factor in.”

As you may remember, in Captain America: Civil War the Avengers break up and fight against one another over the Sokovia Accords. Originally, Black Widow sides with Iron Man and signs the Accords but she later betrays the team to let Cap and Bucky escape. She, along with the rest of Team Captain America, is put in prison for her actions and is later rescued by a shield-less Steve Rogers.

Following the events of Civil War, Natasha isn’t seen again until Avengers: Infinity War which takes place two years later.

Black Widow takes place during those lost years and is going to give fans a look at what Natasha was up to during her exile between movies. Judging by the trailers, we’re also going to learn more about her past when she was a Russian-trained assassin.
