Marvel Studios surprised everyone today by dropping their new lineup of MCU Phase 4 films. The new look at Phase 4 didn’t necessarily announce any new films but gave fans new and first looks at some as well as updated titles for others. It’s a lot of news so let’s break it down!

Releasing in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9, Black Widow will be the first MCU Phase 4 film. Acting as a swan song for Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, the film will give audiences a look into Black Widow’s past and what she was up to between the events of Civil War and Infinity War.

Releasing in theaters on September 3, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (pronounced SHONG-chee) will be the second MCU Phase 4 film and Marvel’s first with an Asian protagonist. The movie follows Shang-Chi who was trained as an assassin from a young age only to step away from that world to live a normal life. Not a lot is known about the movie, but we do know that we will be getting the real Mandarin after Iron Man 3’s fake-out.

Eternals – November 5, 2021

One of the biggest surprises of today’s announcement was the first look at Eternals. Even though it was only a few seconds long, the footage was plenty to get fans hyped for its release on November 5. The film will introduce audiences to the Eternals, an alien race created by the Celestials who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years.

Spider-Man No Way Home – December 17, 2021

Jumping to 2022, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be the first film of the year and the fifth film in the MCU’s Phase 4. Again, Marvel didn’t give us any footage only an updated title card. Like No Way Home, this movie’s plot is being kept secret, but we do know Elizabeth Olsen will be reprising her role as the Scarlet Witch and certain WandaVision plot points will be expanded upon.

Thor Love and Thunder – May 6, 2022

Thor’s fourth solo film, Thor Love and Thunder will be released May 6 with Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi returning. Marvel hasn’t released a lot of the plot details, but we know Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will also return and become Mighty Thor. The Guardians of the Galaxy are also set to appear which makes sense since the last time we saw Thor he was with the Guardians at the end of Endgame.

Black Panther Wakanda Forever – July 8, 2022

Marvel is continuing with the Black Panther sequel despite Chadwick Boseman’s untimely death last year. Marvel and Director Ryan Coogler have stated that the role of T’Challa will not be recast and instead the sequel will focus on the world of Wakanda. Today’s title reveal, Wakanda Forever, is just the first of many tributes to the late actor that we can expect when this movie releases in July of next year.

The Marvels – November 11, 2022

Another massive reveal today was the updated title for Captain Marvel 2. The Marvels is an exciting title as it sets the stage for not only Carol Danvers’ return as Captain Marvel but also the big-screen introduction of Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel who will get her own Disney+ show later this year. The Marvels will also bring back Monica Rambeau from WandaVision and potentially introduce Blue Marvel to the MCU.

Ant-Man’s third movie will bring the MCU’s Phase 4 into 2023 with a February release date. The cast from the previous movies is set to return along with Kathryn Newton playing an older Cassie Lang and Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. Nothing is known about the plot but given the events of Endgame and the addition of Kang you can assume that time travel will play a major role.

The Guardians are back for their third installment in 2023. Director James Gunn and the entire cast are set to return, but besides that nothing else has been revealed. Thankfully we won’t have to wait until 2023 to see these characters again as they will appear in both Thor Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in 2022.

Fantastic Four – ????

Marvel closed out their announcement with another hint at their future Fantastic Four film. This logo may just symbolize the MCU’s Phase 4, but it’s also the same one Marvel used when they announced a Fantastic Four film at the Disney Investor meeting last year. Needless to say, the Fantastic Four are coming to the MCU just don’t expect them before 2023.
