Pokemon Go: How to defeat Darkrai, weakness and counters

Darkrai is a Gen IV pure Dark-type Mythical Pokemon, but do you know the counters and weakness of the Pitch-Black Pokemon?

Darkrai certainly isn’t the strongest Pokemon, its resistances and weaknesses are fairly evenly balanced, but that doesn’t make it a pushover, so you’ll likely still need to make sure you’re using a counter Pokemon to exploit its weakness in battle.

What counters Darkrai in Pokemon Go?

If you’re familiar with the Pokemon series, you’ll know by now that certain types have either (or both) of a damage advantage or incoming damage reduction in certain matchups, known as super effective and not very effective respectively. Darkrai is a pure Dark-type Pokemon – giving it a few favourable matchups, and a few less favourable matchups.

Specficially, Darkrai has a very favourable matchup against Psychic-type attacks, resisting them twice, and fares well against Ghost or other Dark-type Pokemon, but struggles against Bug, Fairy or Fighting-types.

Of course, we’ll also take a look to see what moves Darkrai has, to help determine what makes the best counter against it in Pokemon Go.

For moves, Darkrai uses 3 Dark-type attacks, a Fighting-type attack, and a Ghost-type attack. Bug-types are likely the weakest of the three options here, as they will only resist the Fighting-type move. For comparison, Fighting-type Pokemon would resist all 3 of Darkrai’s Dark-type attacks in Pokemon go, making them a good counter option to use while dealing super-effective damage from its type weakness.

With that said, Fairy-types actually one-up that, as they resist both Dark-types and Fighting-types, making them resistant to all but one move that Darkrai can use.

Darkrai Pokemon Type weakness

To summarise, Darkrai has a type weakness against Fighting, Bug and Fairy-types. Fairy-types are the strongest counter against Darkrai in Pokemon Go, with Fighting-types taking a close second place. If you don’t have access to any of these, at minimum you’ll want to avoid using Psychic-type Pokemon as they’ll deal massively reduced damage.

Anything else to mention?

That’s really it for the weakness and counters of Darkrai in Pokemon Go. Stick to Fairy-type attacks and you should have no trouble against the Pitch-black Pokemon. If you don’t have many of those, Fighting-types or Bug-types are your second choices.

Just remember to avoid using Psychic, Ghost and Dark-type Pokemon if you don’t have any of the counter types.
