Some evolutions in Pokemon Go require the Pokemon to be of a specific gender, but how do you find out what gender a Pokemon is in the game?

Fortunately, this is a pretty easy thing to do, it’s just easy to miss in Pokemon Go as well.

Now, in some cases, Pokemon show visual differences between them for gender difference – Pikachu does this for example. It has a different tail depending on gender. This is not true for all Pokemon though, so I won’t rely on visual tells.

Instead, go to your Pokemon list in Pokemon Go, an example of mine is shown below.

Now, if we select say, Gardevoir from the list, we get the Pokemon page dedicated to that particular Pokemon. On the right side of Gardevoirs health bar, we can see a female gender icon. If you have difficulty locating it, it can be easy to miss at first, try looking below the golden date stamp.

It’ll seem extremely obvious once you see it for the first time, but its really quite easy to miss before that point, so don’t worry about it too much if you had simply never noticed this tiny little gender icon in Pokemon Go before.

So there you have it, that’s how to find the gender of a Pokemon in Pokemon Go.

Why does Gender matter in Pokemon Go?

Some evolutions, such as the one featured in our title image – Pyroar, have different appearances based on their gender.

Some Pokemon even get gender-specific evolutions, – such as Gallade, who can only be achieved with a male Kirlia – so knowing how to find and check gender in Pokemon Go can be very important to make sure you’re investing in the right type of Pokemon.

Is there anything else to be aware of?

Nope, as it turns how to find gender in Pokemon Go is actually quite simple – it’s just with the icon being so small and blending in somewhat with the background, it’s actually quite easily missed if you’re not paying particular attention.

If you were hoping to find the gender of a wild Pokemon in Pokemon Go, you are unfortunately out of luck – the only way to tell in that case is by using physical visual tells, such as the difference in Pikachu’s tail depending on gender mentioned back at the start – there are no other ways to determine a wild Pokemons gender, and not all Pokemon have these tells.
