New Valve Steam deck, shipping dates and prices announced.

Steam Store Home Promo

Valve have released news of their new Handheld console, the Steam Deck. And yes, it does sound like a Streaming device.

The name may need some work; however, the console itself promises power, comfort, and adaptability. Indeed, the specs on this device seem to be up to scratch to deliver a nice piece of technology to add to your gaming collection.

As well as having a good piece of equipment you will be able to access your steam account and full Steam library.

Here is what we know about the Valve Steam Deck.

The Valve Steam Deck is a handheld console slightly bigger than a Nintendo Switch that has the resources and power of a full gaming PC. It uses a modified version of SteamOS, which is easy to use in the Steam store and your own personal Steam Library. However, it also has a computer desktop feature that will grant you access to all the non-Steam related content you want.

Indeed, the portable device will have a 7-inch 1280×800 resolution screen, a custom quad-core AMD APU processor, 16GBs of RAM, and 8 UC RDNA 2 for the graphics processor. In simple terms, this means it will be able to play substantial games in a high graphical setting with ease.

The button layout is very similar to an Xbox Elite controller. The Valve Steam Deck has ABXY buttons, 8 triggers and bumpers, a directional pad, and Joysticks. However, where the handheld device differs is its built-in gyroscope, trackpad and of course a multi-input touchscreen. This should give you the freedom to play your games however you see fit.

The Valve Steam Deck also comes with connectivity functions such as Bluetooth to be paired with your own devices (e.g., Headset), the ability to be set up in a dock (Valve will also be selling a dock separately) to connect a mouse and keyboard, and other screen connectivity possibilities.

So what are the costs of Valve’s new handheld device.

Valve has put in place a pre-order reservation system for 3 different versions of the Valve Steam Deck. The differences between all of them are the amount of storage you get, from 64GB to 512GB. The prices range from around £358 to £580, Valve president Gabe Newell mentioned in an interview with IGN “that hitting these prices was painful but critical”.

Reservation opens on the 16th of July at 6 pm (GMT), although, Valve will only start shipping in December 2021. There is a reservation fee that should help with bot purchases. The customers from the select regions (US, Canada, EU and the UK) will only be allowed to reserve one Valve Steam Deck per customer.

I am very interested to see how the Steam Deck turns out as the specs should be more than enough to run AAA games smoothly with a battery life between two to eight hours. You can always read more tech news here.
