It’s official, we finally have our star actor for the HBO Max Green Lantern series, and it’s Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner! So, let’s talk about it.
According to a story from The Hollywood Reporter, Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story, Ratched) will be joining the DC universe as a classic Green Lantern Corps member, Guy Gardner.
“Wittrock will play Guy Gardner, one of the many Green Lantern characters that will be featured in the big-budget drama from exec producer Greg Berlanti and Warner Bros. TV. In recent decades the character has been portrayed in the comics as a parody of a militant, macho American hero. The HBO Max character is described as “a hulking mass of masculinity, and, as rendered in the comics, an embodiment of 1980s hyper-patriotism. And yet, Guy is somehow likable.”The Hollywood Reporter
The news comes as a surprise to many, and while a lot of fans were happy with the casting (with the understanding that Gardner’s hair will still be red), others were left to wonder why another classic GL isn’t the star of the HBO Max series.
Many Green Lantern fans were hoping that the star of the HBO Max series would be John Stewart, one of the protectors of Earth, and a member of the Green Lantern Corps’ Honor Guard.
One of the biggest reasons that people wanted to see John Stewart get his big debut in a live-action Green Lantern series, is the fact that it would serve to bring more of the well-deserved recognition that the Black community needs in Hollywood.
Personally, I would have loved to see John Stewart join the DC Universe in this new series, and I think that Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther, This Is Us) or John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Pacific Rim Uprising) would be fantastic picks, among others.
Hopefully we’ll see John Stewart make his long-awaited appearance in the upcoming HBO Max series that we hope to see in the near future.
