“Red VS Blue” spinoff Family Shatters premieres 10/20

Red VS Blue Family Shatters spinoff Rooster Teeth

Rooster Teeth, the production company behind projects such as RWBY and a few subsidiaries including Screw Attack, among others. Rooster Teeth’s longest-running series “Red VS Blue” has its first spinoff premiering on October 20th, with each new episode premiering on Wednesdays.

The new spinoff, “Red VS Blue: Family Shatters”, isn’t any sort of canonical work or replacement for anything existing RvB, but more of a fun experimental side project for fans of the series to enjoy.

Below we’re going to do into some detail on what to expect from Family Shatters, how it stacks up against “Red VS Blue” itself, and the overall differences between the two.

“Red VS Blue”

For those unaware of what “Red VS Blue” actually is, the show is a web series featuring locations, references, and overall lore from the Halo video game universe and transformed into a hilarious Halo-themed, almost sitcom-styled, show that brings to light the smaller individuals fighting the good fight in Blood Gulch and beyond.

With season 18 of “Red VS Blue” a new era of the series began, leaving the “Legacy” era behind, and started bringing us new characters and enemies that came from outside of the Halo universe, marking the first time the show took a more original approach to the material presented.

Although these enemies are from outside the Halo universe, they are not referenced as such making “Red VS Blue” tell their story in a new way with different monsters instead of the traditional, existing “Halo” or RvB lore.

Family Shatters will utilize Unreal Engine

“Red VS Blue” is headed into its 19th season but until that time comes Rooster Teeth is presenting fans with something special: the first in hopefully several spinoffs series from a team using new, experimental techniques outside of strictly “Halo” gameplay and similar software and uses Unreal Engine.

Technology from Epic Games, which recently appeared to be on better terms with Innersloth since bringing their Among Us variant to life, is currently being used in this project and future projects for RvB on Rooster Teeth.

Utilizing Epic Games’ Unreal Engine the team was able to use new techniques to bring a more updated, possibly smoother, and advanced “Red VS Blue” experience for fans. Using this new technology, the newest season of RvB is sure to stand out compared to its previous seasons and Family Shatters is just a test of those technologies.

Specifically “Red VS Blue: Family Shatters” was created using Machinima 2.0 within Unreal Engine.

What exactly is “Red VS Blue: Family Shatters”?

Family Shatters specifically are shorter episodes compared to the usual RvB format, running between 3 and 5 minutes, but Family Shatters is just as strong and memorable as the original “Red VS Blue”, just with much smaller concepts, if any, per episode.

While Family Shatters follows the same group of Spartans that were introduced in season 18: Shatter Squad. Family Shatters is much more sitcom-like than the usual “Red VS Blue” episode and although “Red VS Blue” has always been hilarious, Family Shatters takes a somewhat different approach to comedy – it even has its own theme song!

When and where to watch “Red VS Blue: Family Shatters”?

“Red VS Blue: Family Shatters” premiers its first episode “Shatter Squad Needs A Pet” on Wednesday, October 20th for Rooster Teeth FIRST members and available on Rooster Teeth and YouTube the following day on Thursday, October 21st.

Episodes will release weekly following said schedule, with Rooster Teeth FIRST members gaining first access, for a total of 10 episodes total.

Family Shatters: first impressions

Overall, Family Shatters feels like a dysfunctional family that just can’t seem to find the true interest in each other but knows that they’re stuck together and cope in their own ways.

Family Shatters comes off as more friendly and fun than the traditional more serious RvB episodes but more of a stuck-in-the-house type of situation, rather than on the battlefield.

It’s an interesting turn compared to what fans of RvB are used to but any fan of the show will appreciate these episodes as it expands upon the show’s branded humor but puts it in a fresh setting that feels more familiar than the usual setting for RvB.

From subjects of pet adoption to dad jokes to use of current lingo, and even references to the show being non-canonical, a simultaneously new and slightly familiar set of characters makes this show no more epic than RvB and isn’t quite a full season of the show but feels just as rewarding to watch and experience this fun project.

Personally, as a longtime RvB fan, I love the concept of Family Shatters and the idea of other smaller shows set inside the “Red VS Blue” Universe and could watch anything related to the show for hours and enjoy it and hopefully this spinoff even more fans to Rooster Teeth’s longest-running series.
